2017 live-action historical dance drama Everlasting Regret put on stage at Huaqing Palace Scenic Spot

Since March 26, 2017 live-action historical dance drama Everlasting Regret has been put on stage at Huaqing Pool in Xi’an. The new version has been upgraded in terms of scenario, choreography, special effect and so on, so as to bring better experience for the audience. From April to October, this drama will be performed at the Jiulong Lake of Huaqing Pool inside the Huaqing Palace Scenic Spot every night. The entire drama consists of four scenes and ten acts, which shall last 70 minutes.

From now on, tourists to Xi’an can appreciate a tourist cultural performance called Dreaming Chang’an – Welcome Ceremony of Tang Style on the theme of the etiquette culture of the Tang Dynasty from the South Gate of the ancient Xi’an City Wall. It is an etiquette performance of the highest standard, which reproduces the grand welcome ceremony during the Tang Dynasty. It is the only state-guest-level welcome ceremony in China. The ceremony adopts the form of ongoing experience performance. It has welcomed distinguished guests including former U.S. President Clinton, Prime Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong and Prime Minister of India Narenda Modi, enjoying a good reputation both home and abroad.

The live-action historical dance drama Everlasting Regret is based on the original Everlasting Regret, Bai Juyi’s masterpiece, who was a very great realistic poet during the Tang Dynasty. With Lishan Mountain as its background and Jiulong Lake of Huaqing Pool as its stage, the drama is performed on Huaqing Palace, the real locality of the story. With pavilion, shed, corridor, palace, weeping willow, and lake as its elements, the drama represents a real history and precious true love in the world against the backdrop of real mountains and waters.

The drama has become a must-go-to stage performance for tourists who come to visit Xi’an, thus called “a gold-lettered signboard” for cultural tourism in Shaanxi. Since 2006 when it was first put on stage, the drama has attracted more than 4.5 million people to watch, accumulatively.

The 2017 edition of Dreaming Chang’an – Welcome Ceremony of Tang Style still consists of two parts, namely, the ongoing experience performance “huge offer of grand welcome ceremony” on the cultural and etiquette square of the South Gate of the ancient Xi’an City Wall and the artistic performance of “chasing dreams along the Silk Road” inside the barbican entrance to the city.

Based on the famous poem of the Song of an Everlasting Regret of Bai Juyi as the blueprint, Everlasting Regret reproduces the touching love story between Li Longji (Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty) and Yang Yuhuan (his highest ranking imperial concubine) occurring in Huaqing Palace over 1300 years ago by fully exploiting scenic resources, adopting high-tech stage lighting, and combing historical stories and live performance.

The performance shall last from April 1st to the end of October. On the evenings of Thursday to Sunday, the performance will be given once (starting at 20:00 every night), while it will be given twice every night during the International Labor Day and the golden week of the National Day.
