One more national top museum to be added in Xi'an
Recently, the Chinese Museums Association issued a public notice listing the museums that have been tentatively selected as the national top museums, one of which is in Xi'an — the Shaanxi Nature Museum. This brings the total number of national top museums in Xi'an to eight.
Shaanxi Nature Museum
The main exhibition areas of the Shaanxi Nature Museum are the Natural Gallery and the Kenneth Behring Gallery. The Natural Gallery houses over 5,000 specimen models, including mineral samples, ancient fossils, and rare plant and animal specimens.
The Kenneth Behring Gallery houses more than 700 rare and precious wildlife specimens donated by international philanthropist Kenneth Eugene Behring.
Shaanxi History Museum
The Shaanxi History Museum is China's first large-scale modern national museum.
The museum houses over 1.7 million pieces. The bronzes from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, pottery figurines from various eras, gold and silver objects from the Han and Tang Dynasties, and Tang Dynasty tomb murals are particularly noteworthy. Its quantity and scale rank among the top in China.
Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum
The Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Mausoleum Site Museum, which is based on the Terracotta Army Museum and relies on the Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Mausoleum Site Park (Li Shan Park), is hailed as "the Eighth Wonder of the World" and "one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century".
Xi'an Beilin Museum
Xi'an Beilin Museum mainly consists of the Confucian Temple, the Stele Forest, the Stone Sculpture Studio, and the Stone Sculpture Art Hall. The museum has a history of over 900 years. It is the oldest and most famous repository of ancient steles in China, serving as a cultural and artistic treasure house.
The museum houses over 4,000 steles and tombstones from the Han to Qing Dynasties, transcending over 2,000 years.
Hanyangling Museum
Hanyangling Museum, which is based on the Han Yang Ling Mausoleum (the burial place of Emperor Jing, the fourth emperor of the Western Han Dynasty), a key national cultural heritage site, exhibits over 10,000 artifacts.
Xi'an Museum
Xi'an Museum comprises the museum, Jianfu Temple Heritage of the Tang Dynasty, and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda.
It now houses over 110,000 cultural relics, with more than 2,000 on display, offering a comprehensive view of the historical development of the city of Xi'an.
Xi'an Banpo Museum
Xi'an Banpo Museum showcases the remains of prehistoric settlements. The site reveals the social organization and way of life of a typical Neolithic Yangshao Culture matriarchal clan settlement over 6,000 years ago.
Xi'an Great Tang West Market Museum
Xi'an Great Tang West Market Museum focuses on the prosperous Tang culture, Silk Road culture, and commercial culture.
With over 20,000 pieces in its collection, which span from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties — a period of more than 3,000 years—it houses a significant number of coins from different historical periods and countries, telling the stories of the Silk Road.
