Xi'an cultural districts to be national nighttime clusters

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced the list for the second batch of national nighttime cultural and tourism consumption clusters on July 18 and two scenic areas in Xi'an, the capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, were included.

The two scenic areas in Xi'an are the Beiyuanmen Historical and Cultural District and the Yisu Theater Cultural District.

Beiyuanmen Historical and Cultural District

With its total area of about 2.24 square kilometers and 49 streets and alleys, the Beiyuanmen Historical and Cultural District is one of the core areas in the city with the richest history and culture, as well as local and ethnic customs.

After years of development, it has become a national and even internationally known tourism area that combines history and culture, ethnic food, tourism, shopping, leisure and entertainment.

The district has a developed thriving nighttime economy and the general business hours have been extended until after 10 pm. The number of after-dark customers there accounts for more than 60 percent of the whole day's flow of people.

Yisu Theater Cultural District

The Yisu Theater Cultural District, which officially opened to the public in September 2021, has become Xi'an's premier cultural hot spot in less than a year.

It is a dynamic cultural precinct with Yisu Theater as the center, integrating museum exhibitions, Qin Opera performances, Chinese and foreign drama exchanges, opera education and inheritance and cultural creativity.

The district pulsates with Qin Opera performances on offer, drama performances, live performances in musical restaurants and local time-honored food and other thrills that appeal to locals and tourists alike.

In recent years, developing the night economy has become a driving force for Xi'an to promote its retail sales. The 2022 Xi'an government work report proposed expanding the first-store economy, the night economy and the duty-free economy – as well as actively cultivating new forms of spending, new consumption models and new retailing hot spots.
