The name "Weinan" describes the location of the city as "the south bank of the Wei River", although despite the name, the majority of the city area lies north of the Wei River.

Weinan is situated in the east of Shaanxi Province, separated from Shanxi and Henan provinces by the Yellow River. It is bordered by Xi’an and Xianyang in the west, and Yan'an and Tongchuan in the north. The area spans for 182.3 kilometers from the north to south, and 149.7 kilometers from west to east. Playing an important role in the new land bridge of Asia and Europe, it is also considered as the “east gate” of Shaanxi province as well as the gate for the west provinces to enter into the middle and eastern regions of China. With the administrative division of 2 districts (Linwei, Huazhou), 7 counties (Tongguan, Dali, Pucheng, Chengcheng, Baishui, Heyang, Fuping), 2 county-level cities (Huayin, Hancheng), 108 townships and 2076 administrative villages. As of November, 2020, the permanent population is 4,688,744, and covers an area of 13032.9 km². In 2020, the city reached the GDP of 186.627 billion yuan.

History

As a significant area between the ancient Chinese capital Xi'an and Luoyang, Weinan has a long history. Weinan got its name in the year of 360 by the Former Qin regime. In the Tang Dynasty, 10 emperors were buried in Weinan after their death. The Weinan prefecture-level city was established in 1995, in replacement of the Weinan prefecture. Due to the construction of the Sanmenxia Dam, the economy of the city was restricted to agricultural sections and therefore the development level of the city is much lower than other cities in the province. The city developed rapidly after economic reform in China. The east part of Guanzhong Plain now belongs to the city, making Weinan the second most populated city in the Shaanxi province, after the capital Xi'an.

Resources

Weinan owns splendid mountains and rivers, superior natural conditions and abundant agricultural resources. Weinan has a semi-humid and semi-arid monsoon climate in the warm temperate zone, with four distinct seasons, sufficient sunlight and moderate rainfall. Meanwhile, it also enjoys plentiful sunshine, favorable temperatures, and enough rainfall. With flat topography, and fertile soil, it’s very suitable for the development of agriculture, forestry, and animal husbandry. The city has more than 10 kinds of animal in captivity, some of them won the fame of great quality, such as the Qinchuan cattle, the guanzhong donkey and milk goats. Besides, there are also more than 80 kinds of crops and forestry, particularly Flike wheat, corn, beans, cotton, rapeseed, peanuts, apples, crisp pears, vegetables, tobacco, pepper and watermelon.

Agriculture

Weinan is one of the major agricultural producing areas and production bases in Shaanxi even for the entire country, and it is known as "Shaanxi granary" and "Shaanxi Cotton Warehouse”. The output of the major agricultural products like grain, oilseeds, fruit, big livestock, poultry, and eggs accounts for 1/5-1/7 of the province's total contribution. For cotton acreage, it accounts for 4/5 coverage of the province planting land. For the acreage and output of apple, it respectively accounts for 1/5 and 1/4. Seven national commodity grain county bases (Pucheng, Fuping, Linwei, Heyang, Chengcheng, Dali, Hancheng), four state-level high-quality cotton county bases (Dali, clinical Wei, Pucheng, China County), eight state-level high-quality wheat county bases (Pucheng, Fuping, Linwei, Heyang, Chengcheng, Dali, Hancheng, Huaxian),three national dairy goat county bases (Linwei, Dali, FuPing), three national commodity fish county bases (Dali, Heyang, Huayin), and six provincial-level high-quality apple county bases(Baishui, Chengcheng, Pucheng, HeYang, Fuping, Hancheng) had been successively established here.

Tourism & Transportation

Weinan witnesses a long history, especially rich in tourism resources. The tourist spots such as the dangerous but breathtaking Huashan mountain, the magnificent imperial tombs of the Tang Dynasty, the historic saint Simaqian, the calligraphy saint Cangjie, the wine saint Dukang and the largest wetland Qiachuan tourist scenic spot along the Yellow River are very famous. With a convenient transportation system which is the connection hub of the North, Northwest and Southwest of China, Weinan is regarded as “artery of Shaanxi, and thoroughfare for provinces” The whole region has realized the full establishment of the railway in every county, highway in every village, as well as the advanced postal communications.
