The Shaanxi Provincial Winter Games opened on Friday, featuring a speed skating rink frozen using an innovative resource: treated drainage water from local coal mines.

Organizers explained that the recycled water not only meets the strict standards required for ice sports but also serves industrial and agricultural purposes, all at about half the cost of tap water. This approach significantly boosts local water-use efficiency while supporting sustainable sporting events.
