14 subjects of Shaanxi universities made the global top 10

On September 15, ShanghaiRanking, the professional higher education evaluation institution in China, officially released the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). The 2026 ranking covers 57 subjects across five major fields: natural science, engineering, life science, medical science and social science. GRAS evaluates more than 3,000 universities worldwide, and the final ranking features nearly 20,000 disciplinary programmes from over 2,000 universities in 96 countries and regions.

Universities in the Chinese mainland that took the No.1 global spot in 22 subjects

Universities in the Chinese mainland have made steady progress, taking the global No.1 position in 22 subjects. Ocean University of China and Sichuan University each secured their first world-top subject. The total number of ranked subjects for universities in the Chinese mainland exceeded 4,000 for the first time, reaching 4,077, with 394 universities listed. Notably, universities in the Chinese mainland claimed the world's top spot for the first time in two subjects: Chemistry and Oceanography.

Shaanxi universities posted solid results in the 2026 GRAS, with 211 subjects from 18 local universities ranked. Xi'an Jiaotong University tops the province with 42 listed subjects, followed by Northwestern Polytechnical University (28) and Xidian University (20). Chang'an University (18), Xi'an University of Technology (16), Northwest A&F University (15) and Northwest University (15) also recorded strong showings. Shaanxi University of Science and Technology and Shaanxi Normal University each have 10 ranked subjects; Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology has 9. Xi'an University of Science and Technology (7), Air Force Medical University (7) and Xi'an Technological University (5) each have 5 or more ranked subjects, showcasing Shaanxi's robust strength in academic subject building.

In the 2026 GRAS, 14 disciplines from four Shaanxi universities secured global top 10 positions, with ten breaking into the world's top 5. The top-tier subjects include Xi'an Jiaotong University's Energy Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Instrumental Science; Northwestern Polytechnical University's Aerospace Engineering, Remote Sensing and Metallurgical Engineering; Xidian University's Remote Sensing and Communication Engineering; and Northwest A&F University's Agriculture and Water Resources Engineering. Four additional subjects claimed global top 10 spots: Xi'an Jiaotong University's Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering, as well as Northwest A&F University's Veterinary Sciences and Food Science & Engineering. These outstanding achievements demonstrate the solid academic foundation and core competitiveness of Shaanxi's universities in engineering and life sciences.
