The moat at the South Square of Xi'an Railway Station, long concealed underground, is now set to reemerge as a prominent landmark. This historic revival is being expedited, transforming the area into a vibrant focal point for the city. Before long, visitors arriving at the railway station will be greeted by the breathtaking vista of the city wall paired harmoniously with the scenic moat.

In 1952, due to construction constraints and technological limitations of the time, this section of the moat was converted into an underground conduit during the expansion of Xi'an Railway Station.

After decades of dormancy, the moat has finally been revived this year. Early in the year, a comprehensive renovation project began, targeting the moat and Xi'an City Wall Park near the railway station. This initiative addresses issues like deteriorating conduits, sediment buildup, flood risks, and outdated urban scenery, aiming to refresh the city. Once completed, a continuous, vibrant green waterway will encircle the ancient city wall, offering a renewed image for Xi'an.

Originally excavated in the late Tang Dynasty and expanded in the early Ming Dynasty, the Xi'an Moat, along with the city wall, formed a long-lasting defensive system. While its defensive role has faded over the centuries, its cultural significance continues to grow.

Xi'an stands out as a rare modern city that has preserved its ancient city wall and moat. Enhanced by technology, these historic features now harmonize with the modern cityscape, forming a unique cultural landscape. Today, they serve as a cultural emblem of Xi'an on the global stage.

"Once completed, the project will strengthen the moat's flood prevention system, ensure stable water circulation, and link the final part of the waterway. Reopening sections of the river surface will foster a pleasant microclimate along the waterfront. Additionally, the outdoor waiting area at the railway station will be enhanced, elevating the overall landscape around the city wall," said Wang Jie, project manager for the renovation of Xi'an Moat and Xi'an City Wall Park.

The project is nearing completion. Soon, visitors exiting Xi'an Railway Station will be welcomed by the captivating sight of the ancient city wall reflected in the clear waters.
