Explore the newly unveiled Xi'an Grand Theatre

The Xi'an Grand Theatre's Concert Hall officially opened at the end of 2024. Inspired by the Qinling mountain range, this theatre is located in the CID (Central Innovative District) of the Silk Road Science City, Gaoxin District. It serves as an artistic space that is both accessible to the public and culturally significant.

Designed by renowned architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Wang Shu, who also serves as an urban planning and construction consultant for the People's Government of Xi'an Municipality, the theatre boasts a total floor area of 93,000 square meters.  It is a comprehensive performing arts venue encompassing opera, music, traditional Chinese opera, drama, children's theatre, and experimental theatre.

Its design concept follows the principle of "the city and mountains reflecting each other, and mountains and water reflecting each other," effectively linking the underground spaces with the Xi'an Innovation Pavilion and the Future Eye Science Park.

The exterior of the Xi'an Grand Theatre showcases a design that blends colored glazed tiles with stone, creating a stunning effect as they shimmer in the sunlight. The hues of the glazed tiles are inspired by the expansive blue-green natural landscapes of the Tang Dynasty, reflecting the colors found in Tangsancai (tricolored glazed pottery). This refined color palette was achieved through various experimental bricklaying techniques, reminiscent of the Qinling Mountains.

Upon entering the grand theater, you are immediately captivated by the intricate mortise-and-tenon installation in the gray-toned lobby, where sleek columns and walls reflect a modern aesthetic. Here, the concept of "a theater within the city, a city within the theater" is clearly evident.

The newly opened music hall now has approximately 1300 seats and a stage equipped with 12 lifts. Advanced lighting, audio-visual, and other technical equipment are applied, meeting the needs of large-scale symphony concerts, chamber music concerts, and other performances.

Xi'an Grand Theatre boasts professional performance halls of varying sizes, as well as extensive green spaces, connecting walkways, and plazas. These features provide visitors with areas for strolling, socializing, and relaxation. Currently, only the concert hall is open to the public; however, the residents will soon have the opportunity to fully experience the artistic charm of the Xi'an Grand Theatre.
