Routes Asia Empowers Xi'an to Build an International Aviation Hub

The launch of Routes Asia 2026 in Xi'an on April 14 marks a significant milestone for the city, driving new momentum for its international integration and economic growth. The event bridges the rich heritage of this ancient capital with a future of global connectivity.

Established in 2003 by Informa, Routes Asia is the Asia-Pacific's premier aviation forum. Over two decades, it has traveled to hubs like Seoul, Bangkok, and Perth, uniting airlines, airports, and governments as the region's most influential platform for high-level cooperation.

With its strategic location, Xi'an boasts exceptional aviation connectivity—linking major domestic markets with destinations across Central Asia, West Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe. This positions Xi'an as a vital gateway connecting the Asian and European air corridors.

Xi'an's millennia-old heritage and global fame set it apart as a premier cultural hub in Northwest China. This rich history creates a natural synergy between aviation and tourism, making the city a preferred destination for airlines looking to expand their international routes and tap into inbound travel markets.

Xi'an is rapidly evolving into a premier international aviation hub, with Xianyang International Airport now offering full coverage across Central Asia. By integrating its airport economy with multimodal transport and upgrading its infrastructure to international standards, Xi'an is perfectly equipped to host world-class aviation events.

Ranked among China's top ten aviation hubs, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is evolving into a key gateway for the Belt and Road Initiative. The airport is shifting from simple transit services to a comprehensive network that effectively links domestic and international markets. In 2025, the airport served 48.5 million passengers—ranking among the global top 45—launched 60 new or resumed international routes, and expanded its operational capacity to 61 flights per hour.

Steven Small touted this year's Xi'an event as the largest Routes Asia ever, noting its reach now extends well beyond the Asia-Pacific. Economic reports project that the conference will act as a major catalyst for the city, driving substantial passenger growth and economic development through the next three to five years.
