Chang'an was one of the largest, most populous and most prosperous international metropolises of its time. Its layout was meticulously planned, with the Imperial City at its center, the Palace City to the north and the Outer City surrounding it. The streets were laid out like a chessboard, dividing the city into 108 wards and two bustling markets. This layout showcased supreme imperial authority while reflecting the advanced wisdom and aesthetic pursuits of urban planning during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Chang'an was also a vital hub for the exchange of Eastern and Western civilizations. Let’s find out more about the ancient city in this video from Tang Architecture: Building Timeless Glory, an interactive digital exhibition by CGTN on architecture from the glorious era.
