Statistics have shown that in 2017 over 20,000 tons of goods involving Samsung, Micron, and ZTE were imported and exported through Xi’an Customs.

Thanks to the airway network connecting Xi’an with the rest of the world, Shaanxi has successfully integrated itself into the 24-hour global economic circle. The approval of the Xi’an Airport Economic Demonstration Zone has accelerated its pace to become an international airway hub.

On May 7th, the first air route from Xi’an, also known as the first from the Northwest of China to London was inaugurated, becoming another route that connects Xi’an with an important global financial center.

At present, Shaanxi aviation has entered into a blossoming period. By the end of 2017, there were 58 international or regional air routes from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport to Helsinki, Paris, Rome, Moscow, Sydney, Melbourne, and other foreign locations, leading to 47 cities overseas, with an air route network that covers five continents. From the airport, people can now fly to 7 European airports, indicating the westward expansion from Shaanxi is currently taking shape.

While the “radiating airway network in the sky” is establishing itself, the transportation network on the ground is becoming even more intensive, forging a three-dimensional transportation hub at the Xixian New Area Airport New City.

There are now three highways—the Fuzhou-Yinchuan Highway, the Xixian North Ring and the Airport Highway – going through the Xixian New Area Airport New City. In the near future, the Xi’an-Yinchuan high-speed trains and two inter-city railways—the Xi’an-Yanliang Railway and the Xi’an-Famen Temple Railway will also run through the New City.

He Jian, the head of the Administrative Committee of Xixian New Area Airport New City said: “Xixian New Area Airport New City will forge a modern transportation system featuring ‘radiating networks in the sky’ and an ‘eight-way network on the ground’, where the aviation industry will take the lead at the high end, and airway, railway and highway transportation will connect in a seamless way, making the New City worthy of the Silk Road portal that ‘opens to the West, intensive at the East, and radiates to the whole nation’.”

The Xi’an-Guangzhou Cargo Air Route has been in operation since 2016, serving the Micron Project of Xi’an. At the beginning, the route could only deliver 30% of the maximum loading capacity, but after one-year of cultivation, it can now deliver 100% of the capacity.

Driven by air transport, the Airport New City of Xixian New Area has now attracted more than 60 modern logistics companies such as Global Logistic Properties (GLP) and Mapletree to establish themselves there. The logistics industry has formed the aggregation effect. In 2016, the Airport New City of Xixian New Area was selected as one of the first 29 national demonstration logistics parks, becoming one of the only two airport-based demonstration logistics parks in the country.

For the past few years, the Airport New City of Xixian New Area has given priority to open air routes and gathering supplies around key air freight demand. It has successfully opened 13 air cargo routes, including the Xi’an-Seoul air cargo route for Samsung, the Xi’an-Chicago for ZTE and the Xi’an-Guangzhou for Micron. In 2007, the air cargo volume at the Xi’an Xianyang International Airport reached 260,000 tons, with a year-on-year increase of 11.2%, making it rank second in terms of growth rate among the top ten airports in China.

“Regarding the construction of the hub corridor, the Airport New City of Xixian New Area has taken full advantage of the existing domestic and international resources, actively promoting cooperation with UPS and other logistics giants to enhance the connectivity and factor aggregation capacities between the Airport New City of Xixian New Area and the world. This year, Shaanxi will strive for opening more all-cargo air routes to establish a transit hub for the “international intermediate point and domestic central point.” The official in charge of the Airport New City of Xixian New Area said.
