With South Korean companies such as Samsung Electronics Co setting up operations in Xi'an, the capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, South Korean expats now make up one of the city's most populous foreign communities. There are also an increasing number of South Korean restaurants on the streets of Xi'an.

Pan Xiongzhe (Chinese name) opened his first South Korean restaurant, called Miwu Factory, in Xi'an in 2012. Pan is a native of Suncheon, South Korea. He came to China to study in 2004. After graduating from Tsinghua University with a degree in industrial engineering, he returned to South Korea and later returned to Xi'an to work in catering.

He expressed his belief that the authenticity, enthusiasm and boldness of oil-splashed noodles are a true reflection of the Xi'an people. "I also want to bring South Korean food to my friends in Xi'an," he said

At Miwu Factory, all menus are in Chinese, Korean and English. "The main consideration is that there are many international students nearby," Pan said.

To better communicate with guests, Pan has set up a "Korean Class" for employees to teach them how to speak Korean.

Pan also opened two Miwu Factory restaurants in the Xi'an High-tech Industries Development Zone in 2013 and 2017.

A woman surnamed Wang is a Korean teacher at an international school in Xi'an. She often comes to Miwu Factory with her family and friends in her spare time.

"I often meet diners from foreign countries. In addition to enjoying the food, the restaurant has become a place for cultural exchange between China and South Korea," Wang said.
