Xi’an boasts many famous universities, institutes and academies. The campuses are located mainly in the university townships. Yanta and Beilin University Township in the north downtown is the oldest one. Chang’an University Township in the southern suburb of the city is a newly built one holding many new campuses. It is a little far from the city center; however, there are many bus routes which run regularly between the campuses and the city.

Xi’an Jiaotong University

Also known as Nanyang Public University, it was founded in Shanghai in 1896. The university got its present name in 1959. At present, it has developed into an institution which focuses on science and engineering and covers many subjects such as engineering medicine, economics, management, art and law. It collaborates internationally with 145 universities and research institutions from 42 countries worldwide. Nowadays, it has over 30,108 students, including 12,848 Ph. D. students and Masters students.

Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU)

Established in 1938 in Hanzhong, it was originally known as the State Northwest Institute of Engineering. It was moved to Xi’an in October 1957 and combined with the Xi’an Institute of Aeronautics and East China Institute of Aeronautics. It was officially renamed Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1957. Currently, it has 28,363 students, including 170 international students. NPU covers a total area of about 840 acres, among which Youyi Campus owns about 198 acres and Chang’an Campus covers about 642 acres. It develops international cooperation relationships quickly and widely and has already established relationship with more than one hundred universities and research institutions from tens of countries.

Northwest University (NWU)

Located in the famous ancient Chinese capital Xi’an, it was originally founded in 1902 as Shaanxi College. NWU assumed its present name in 1929. There are more than 26,000 students here, including more than 6,600 graduate students and more than 900 international students. It pays close attention to international exchange and cooperation, and has established collaborative relations with nearly 90 institutions of higher learning and research from more than ten countries. NWU has three campuses with a total area of about 389 acres.

Xi’an International Studies University (XISU)

Established in 1952, it was originally known as the Northwest Russian College. It is the only university in northwest China conducting a complete range of foreign language programs. It got its present name in 2006 upon the approval of the Ministry of Education. XISU has developed wide international academic collaboration and has established cooperative relations with 118 overseas universities and educational institutions. It has carried out ‘two-campuses’ programs with 77 universities in 21 countries including Australia, Japan, France, Spain and Canada, for training undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has two campuses: Yanta Campus and Chang’an Campus.

It was founded in 1931 and got its present name in 1988. Currently there are more than 30,000 students, including over 1,600 Ph. D. students and 7,600 Masters students. In recent years, Xidian has quickened its internationalization pace by establishing cooperative relationships and conducting academic cooperation and exchanges with over 100 universities and institutions in more than 40 countries. It has two campuses with a total area of about 659 acres: the Northern Campus and Chang’an Campus.

Established in 1944, it was formerly known as Shaanxi Provincial Teachers College and got its present name in 1960. It is well-known for its cultural history, covering an area of more than 445 acres. It has two Campuses including Yanta Campus and Chang’an Campus. There are more than 50,000 students enrolled at the university, among them 325 foreign students. It actively sets up international cooperation and exchange programs and has built a relationship with 60 universities from more than ten countries including America, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, Korea, Vietnam and Hong Kong.

Xi’an University of Posts and Telecommunications (XUPT) is co-designed and implemented by the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.The University is located in Xi’an, a historic city in Northwest China, famous for its magnificent ancient culture. XUPT was founded in 1950 and gradually developed into a polytechnic university focusing on engineering and the specialization of information science technology. This regimen of engineering specialization has been consummated by integrating the disciplines of engineering, management, science, economics, the humanities, law, and art. The University covers a total area of 247 acres, with a current full-time student enrollment of 18,000.

Xi’an Shiyou University

Xi’an Shiyou University(XSYU) is a unique multidisciplinary university in northwest china characterized by petroleum and petro-chemical engineering. As a study demonstration base of Chinese government scholarship for foreign students in China, XSYU has the independent enrollment right of foreign students. And XSYU is qualified as the first innovation bases of Shaanxi Provincial post-doctoral, as well as Doctor`s degree authorized institution.

XSYU was founded in 1951 as Northwest Petroleum Technical School and upgraded to xi 'an petroleum institute in 1958. In 1969 it changed into a factory and rebuilt in 1980. In 2003, it was renamed Xi 'an Shiyou university.

The university has three campuses, the Yanta campus at Electronic Industrial Park of High-tech Industrial Development Zone of Xi’an, the Mingde campus in Xi’an Zhangba East Road, the Huyi campus in Xi’an Fengjing Industrial Park of Huyi District. XSYU covers an area of 2,078 acre, with total fixed assets of 2.808 billion Yuan and total equipment of 603 million Yuan.
