On June 18th, the heritage site protection project for the Mingde Gate in Chang’an City of Tang was launched in Xi’an. According to the plans, the Protection Project will take the Demonstration Zone of Mingde Gate Heritage Site Protection as its core and create an open and urban space by relying on the historical background of Chang’an, the capital of the Sui (581 – 618) and Tang (618 – 907) Dynasties. This project will elaborate the residential area division method named Lifang at that time, which means dividing the residential area into many different sections using the Li measurements, in combination with the meaning of the Anyifang in Chang’an. It tells the story of people’s lives during the Tang dynasty in integration with modern life. The Mingde Gate was built in the Sui Dynasty in AD 582 and was reconstructed during the Tang Dynasty in AD 654. It was the South Gate of the Chang’an City of Tang, which formed the north-south central axis of Chang’an together with the Zhuque Gate of the Imperial City and the Chengtian Gate of the Palace City. The heritage site of the gate is of great value for studying the city gate system, architectural system, etiquette system and the transportation system in the Tang Dynasty.
