Foreign artists manipulating giant puppets under the Dayan Pagoda attract swarms of visitors

On the afternoon of May 1st, a few of foreign artists carried 3-meter-high giant puppets and performed around the south square of the Dayan Pagoda in Xi’an, bringing surprise and joy to visitors.

In order to cooperate with the outdoor public drama activity of the 7th Xi’an Drama Festival, Australian artists specializing in performing with giant puppets were invited to Xi’an. They made the giant puppets together with local citizens and then toured at the south square of the Dayan Pagoda.

The artists are from Snuff Puppets in Melbourne, Australia, world-renowned for its the innovative giant puppets as well as for giant puppet shows.

The touring giant puppet show was not only a part of the outdoor public drama activities of the 7th Xi’an Drama Festival, but served as an important program for cultural exchanges in Xi’an City this year. It was reported that, over the past 2 weeks 4 artists from the Snuff Puppets together with 26 Xi’an citizens have made joint efforts to design and create 7 giant puppets featured with Xi’an elements. This was the first time for the city to invite foreign artists to come and carry out public artistic creation with local citizens.

After the tour, the giant puppets will be preserved in Xi’an, becoming a part of the scenery of Xi’an City, offering an unprecedented artistic culture experience to the local citizens and visitors.
