On March 21st, visitors passed through the sea of flowers to enter the exhibition room for the stone steles viewing. In a season such as this, the deep courtyard of the Forest of Stone Tablets Museum is full of flowers and spring is in the air.

Spring has arrived in the deep courtyard in the Forest of Stone Tablets.

Established in the year 1087, the Xi’an Steles Forest is an art treasure house which holds the earliest and the largest number of ancient stone steles in China, including more than 1,000 stone steles and epitaphs from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. It enjoys a high reputation due to the numerous stone steles as the forest. Xi’an Steles Forest is hailed as the largest stone library in China, which is also a treasure house of calligraphy and history.

According to the tour guide, the two Chinese characters of “碑林” was inscribed by Lin Zexu, a leading Chinese scholar and official of the Qing Dynasty, when he passed by Xi’an on his way to Yili, a municipality in Xinjiang Autonomous Region. He was later demoted after the First Opium War in 1840. The left-hand component of the Chinese character “碑” has slipped, indicating his mental state after demotion.

Visitors were mesmerized by the spring scenery in the deep courtyard.
